The duration and validity period of ESTA Travel Authorization





The Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) was established in 2009 to allow citizens from Visa Waiver Program member countries to simplify procedure required to obtain a visa. However, this new system only works under certain specific conditions. If you have your approved travel authorization and you plan to take your second trip to the United States, you should be aware that travel authorization once obtained can be used for several visits.

Do I need to apply for ESTA if…



I am a citizen of Canada?No, if you are traveling with a Canadian passport, you do not need an ESTA.
I am a Landed Immigrant of Canada?No, if you are a citizen of a VWP country, and you are traveling by land to the U.S. Yes, if you are coming to the U.S. by air or sea.
No, if you are not a citizen of a VWP country, but you are required to have a visa. For more information about how to apply for a US visa follow this link.
I am a Lawful Permanent Resident of the United States and a citizen of a VWP country?No.
I am a citizen of a VWP country and I am going to Guam or Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI)?Yes, if you travel under the VWP.
No, if you are eligible for Guam/CNMI VWP, but the maximum stay is only 45 days and stay is restricted to those islands only - travel cannot be to the United States.
I am a citizen of a VWP country and I am traveling under the VWP to Puerto Rico or the U.S. Virgin Islands?Yes, ESTA is required for travel to these locations.
I am traveling to the United States by air to transit for another country?Yes, if you are only planning to transit through the United States to another country, you must apply for ESTA.
I am visiting the U.S. from Canada or Mexico?No, if you are a citizen of a VWP country and you are coming by land. You are only required to complete the paper I-94W form at the land border crossing.
Yes, if you are a citizen of a VWP country and you are arriving by air or sea.
Please note that VWP citizens do not need an ESTA to travel on the ferries between Vancouver and Victoria, BC and Washington state, because they are treated as a land border port.
I have a valid visa (B1/B2)?No, if you already have a B1/B2 or any other valid visa and you are traveling for the purpose in which it was issued.
